Alibaba has been dominant in China’s merchandise e-commerce space, but the competition is heating up. In March, Tencent and JD.com formed a partnership with the intent of maximizing their respective strengths to become a legitimate competition to Alibaba’s e-commerce business. By designating JD.com as Tencent’s preferred partner for merchandise e-commerce, the strategic partnership enables JD.com to tap into Tencent’s significant mobile and Internet user base, and allows Tencent to leverage JD.com’s merchandise e-commerce services, streamlining an enhanced user experience.
